Beer Lately

Probably the most prevalent news in beer this past week is of the buyout of the Pabst Blue Ribbon by a Russian beverage conglomerate based in Cyprus. On September 19th, Oasis Beverages announced their purchase of the iconic American PBR brand.
As one of the last truly American brands founded in Milwaukee, it's unfortunate that it will now be operated by a foreign company, whose main activities have been (until recently) in Kazakhstan, Belarus, and Ukraine. However, it's definitely not the first time we've seen iconic American beer brands go this route (looking at you ABInBev and MillerCoors).

On the craft brew side, we're in full swing for Oktoberfest brews!! I'm seeing many different breweries Oktoberfest specials roll through the bars and have been lucky enough to try a lot of them. Still, I haven't quite narrowed down a favorite - but am counting on my experience at the Charlotte Oktoberfest to give a helping hand!

My sister's favorite, so far.

And today, I feel obligated to share my recent beer discovery with the world. My former college roommate Bailey invited me over for a birthday celebration wherein I was introduced to a Manmosa. As a frequent enjoyer of Sunday brunches with standard mimosas, this concoction hit true in my book. The recipe is simple and effective - you need a bottle of your favorite OJ and a 6 pack of Miller High Life. Open your miller, take a good swig or so to remove 2oz or so from the neck and refill with OJ, give it a moment to settle and enjoy! Normally, I would just leave the Millers, and choose some different brew. But, I have to say Manmosas are a cheap and tasty way to celebrate your Sunday mornings, especially if you aren't much on champagne!

Ruh Roh Shaggy, Sweaters

My house is covered in leaves, so it must be autumn! Thus, I opened up my sweater-storage bin, and I was worried about what I would find.

inspected by dog #1

It wasn't so great. I haven't added any new sweaters to my closet in a few years (thanks to sweatshirt trend), and the ones I wear frequently are looking ragged! Time to hit to interwebs and find something new & cozy.

FYI, I am definitely a more reasonable shopper online, where I can read reviews, hunt for coupons, shop in my PJs, and take advantage of free returns. In particular, I am looking for a slouchy, comfortable sweater that goes with everything in my closet. Ho Ho! Not too much to ask, right? Just a bum-covering cardigan sweater, probably in gray.

Here's some of my favorites right now.

All things nubbly seem to be in style! However I fear this sweater may, in fact, be just enormous. Not "boyfriend" or "oversized"... just ginormous. It's cool though. It is a blend of materials: 63% Acrylic, 25% Wool, 12% Polyester. Joie makes quality garments in my experience, but I am wary of man made materials (like acrylic) in my sweaters.

I love this sweater/jacket below. I'm not sure why - but it might be the mohair-eque material and a cool print. And it's black/white/gray which goes with everything in my closet. This sweater is a blend of 45% cotton, 30% viscose, 20% nylon, and 5% cashmere. And it has pockets!

Here is another gray open-front cardigan from one of my favorite designers, Vince. It also has some good reviews on nordstrom's website. Personally, I am hesitant about that collar - if you're busty it could get too crowded up there, you know?

Fluffy! But not a cardigan.

This is a really cool jacket-sweater, erring more on the jacket side.

Love! I like the fuzzy panels; Tibi never lets me down. It also comes in different color combinations.

The Many Hairstyles of Pasha

I wonder what hair-styling products he uses?

This baby was born with a head of great hair! Pasha's mom Sahar Hafeez posted these fun pics from bath time. Pasha & family live in Toronto, Canada. As seen on reddit.

Crafts and Drafts

I thought it was starting to cool off but today it is HOT! We were walking around downtown and passed by Paddy O'Beers - and stopped in for a pint. If you live downtown, it's quite convenient. And, the bartender was super friendly and offered solid recommendations.

It's not a giant place, but there is a significant selection on beer in the retail section, and they also serve several local drafts at the bar. There's also some nice sidewalk seating - it was nice to chill out in the shade, because it was a beautiful day :)

My mind was in fact blown.

Birthday Boy had to try some of mine too.

If you have the inclination, go see Dirty Dancing at DPAC!

The music was awesome, the dancing was superb, and a fun time was had by all :)

A little bit about these shoes - they are insanely comfortable - I can wear them all day and all night. See the Zappos reviews! I do not lie! I think it has to do with a very sturdy construction and a hidden platform. They also come in a jillion colors and finishes.

I was definitely dancing in my seat.

Free Donuts Matey!

That's what a lot of people were saying at the Krispy Kreme Donuts yesterday.

KK was running a promotion for PIRATE DAY - 1 free donut if you ordered with your pirate voice, and 1 dozen free donuts if you also dressed like a pirate! The KK in downtown Raleigh was full of buccaneers and wenches who were willing to walk the plank for free donuts.

Check out this ridiculous video.

Brewers Against Brothels

We recently went to the "Brewers Against Brothels" fundraiser to raise awareness of human trafficking in North Carolina. All proceeds went to F.I.G.H.T., a local branch of the Salvation Army.

@ the Visual Arts Center, downtown Raleigh

Trophy Brewing, Raleigh Brewing Co., and Big Boss Brewing all donated beer for the event, and there was also a lineup of live music. See more information about F.I.G.H.T. here!

Break out the jackets

Now that the weather is cooling off - break out the jackets! I love this yellow one from Banana Republic - it's probably 10 years old, but it's 100% cotton and has been treated very well. Still lookin good! It has 3/4 sleeves, nice patch pockets on the front, and is gathered in the back. It makes me feel that my leopard print sneakers are more appropriate to wear to the office :)

All day I dream about dresses

I'm not the most sporty gal, but an easy to wear dress always sounds good - like this one from recent London Fashion Week pics (Day 4).

Although it's not listed on the adidas site, I did find these other (albeit less colorful) versions below.

I'm a sucker for animal prints, like the zebra on this sweatshirt dress.

sweatshirt dress $56

This is a looser shape, as in the LFW photo. Too bad it's not listed in more colors!

And this one is probably my favorite - check out that glimmer!

Party in my Makeup Bag

with enough coffee, anything is possible.

I am a no-nonsense makeup gal. I don't wear much, and if it doesn't work - I trash it. But these few are definitely worth note.

1, Bare Minerals SPF 15 compact in translucent - evens tone (just a little!), and adds SPF when I need it.
2. IT cosmetics hello light creme illuminator - I use on my eyelids to look well rested.
3. Chapstick in spearmint - millions of uses, and smells great :)
4. Chanel rouge coco shine in mutine (#90) - my go-to nude lip. Natural but better.
5. NARS semi-matte lipstick in schiap - this color is not for the faint of heart! It stays on forever.
6. Tarte lip stain in lust - I <3 a red lip, and this is super moisturizing and easy to apply.
7. Ayers body butter in midnight tango - rich and balmy, with a strong scent that I love.

Alexander Wang + h&m

Now that Altuzarra + Target is behind us (and still available online in lots of sizes) - you might want to add this date to your calendar:

Alexander Wang for h&m
November 6, 2014

Alexander Wang has designed a special collection for h&m, with a distinctly sporty feel. He created a selection of tops, bottoms, jackets, and accessories especially for the h&m crowd, considering the lower price point - so this isn't just cheap copies of expensive pieces (yay)! Check out this awesome jacket! Goggles not required.

Altuzarra for Target

Today is the release of the Altuzarra collection for Target. Hooraaayyyy! I had been keeping an eye on my calendar, so that I made sure to get there in time to take a look at some of the items in person.

I need another pair of shoes like I need a hole in my head, but here we are.

ankle boot

They have a witch bootie vibe, right?

READER BEWARE! Last night was rough. And these photos were taken early. I rolled out of bed for the thrill of the hunt (#iwokeuplikethis for real).

I love this dress, it's very flattering. It's not as shiny in person as it is in the Target photos.

floral maxi dress

I plan to wear this to go to my friends' December wedding.

look at my Angelina leg :P

There is another dress that is very similar, but a knee length style, in dark purple with an orchid print. Unfortunately, I think that the sleeves were sewn on goofy! The arm-holes gape underneath, and were very small across the shoulders. The neckline is also a bit large across my bust. But maybe it's just me.

orchid print dress

I didn't think I would like this shirt, but the sleeves are just a little poufy - and I love that! I have broad shoulders but I like to emphasize them. There is also a nice cuff on the sleeves. Very nice!

python blouse

This is a good way to cheat at layering, much in the style of Mary Orton at TheClassyCubicle. I like having a waistline, so will probably belt it with a chunky cardigan.
